Contrasts in Leadership

April 27, 2009

The Economist carries an interesting article contrasting different nations and different leadership backgrounds. In America, lawyers, and in China, Engineers. The article doesn’t say this but it is quick to my mind, I think of Dostoyevski and George Washington. George Washington (I believe) said that America is a respector of laws not of men. We are a nation founded by and on natural law and common law.

Dostoyevski’s book Crime and Punishment often thought of as one of the greatest debates against Marxism points out that the socialist intelligensia wishes to to control individuals and make them into nothing more then predictable robots. For communism and socialism to ultimately work every person has to “do their duty” in the wheel of life. Whatever that may be and regardless of the reward. People must lay down their emotions of hate, jealousy, love, and etc. It would take an engineer of a great mind to create a true utopia here on this world. It also takes a lot of guts to think you have the mind and ability to move such a project forward because it places any leader working towards that goal above the law in a place where the ends justify the means.
